Include the stump and your plans for the area
Stump grinding can be discussed after a tree has been removed or as part of a broader tree-removal request. Tell us how many stumps are involved, their approximate size and where they sit in relation to fences, structures and other improvements. Access to the stump is an important part of reviewing the job.
The intended next use helps clarify the scope. A lawn area, landscaping change and future building site may involve different follow-on work. Grinding should not be assumed to remove every root or prepare a location for construction on its own.
Discuss how grindings and surrounding material should be handled and what condition you want the area left in. If excavation or site preparation is also needed, include it in the inquiry so the relationship between the tree work and ground work is understood.
